John Valdes
A fifth-generation Floridian and third generation Florida builder from the Tampa Bay area, John Valdes began his career in the construction Industry in 1962 working on weekends and summer breaks for his father’s building and plumbing company. Continuing in the construction industry through high school and junior college John eventually left the University of South Florida to begin a career working overseas for American and foreign based construction companies and finally his own Saudi based company doing work in the Middle East.
John arrived in St. Augustine in 1986 after selling his company interest to his Saudi and British partners. Shortly after arriving, and needing a project, John began buying historic buildings and restoring them which led to his starting a consulting /inspection company. John with his new company, Better Homes Inspection Service Inc. started 1989, introduced the professional pre-purchase home inspection to the real estate community and St. Johns County. John credits his experience doing inspections and consulting work locally as the vantage point for seeing what products and procedures work and more importantly does not work in our North Florida coastal environment.
In 1992, John began John Valdes and Associates Inc. which has enjoyed great success and is best known for renovating and restoring St. Augustine’s historic homes and buildings downtown as well as for the construction of fine new homes and commercial properties throughout St. Johns County.
John considers his buildings to be a part of his connection not only to the past, but to the future as well .As part of our historic restoration work we reach back through time into people’s lives that are long gone and with our new buildings we will reach lives in the future that are not yet dreamed of.
John, with nearly 52 years in the construction industry, presently holds active construction field licenses in the State of Florida as a building contractor, master plumber contractor, unlimited roofing contractor, and real estate sales associate and building inspector. John has previously held electrical certifications and site utilities certifications.
John is a present member and past chair of the City of St. Augustine’s Planning and Zoning Board. He was also a member and chair of the Code Enforcement /Adjustments and Appeals Board and has served as a member of the Historical Architectural Review Board in the City of St. Augustine. John was first appointed to a city board in 1989 and has served 22 years of the last 24 as a citizen board member in the City of St. Augustine.
